Slovenia caves and karst
Lipica Horses and Škocjan Caves
Lipizzaner heritage and one of the world’s great underground canyons — across the border in Slovenia.
A seven-hour cross-border excursion from Rijeka to Lipica Stud Farm — home of the Lipizzaner tradition since the sixteenth century — and the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves, known for their vast underground canyon.
The day crosses into Slovenia toward the Karst plateau. Škocjan Caves showcase an underground river canyon on a dramatic scale, with walkways and viewpoints that feel very different from a typical coastal shore day.
Lipica Stud Farm adds living heritage: centuries of Lipizzaner breeding in a parkland setting that is as much cultural landscape as tourist stop.
Wear warm, comfortable clothing for the cave section. Food is not included, and only Lipica is listed as wheelchair accessible — the caves are not a step-free experience for most guests.

Getting there from the cruise port
Cruise ships calling at Rijeka may use different docking areas, and some calls tender rather than berth alongside. Confirm your exact meeting point from your booking confirmation — tours typically leave from the cruise ship pier or tender pier. From the main passenger terminal, Rijeka's centre (including Korzo) is often walkable in roughly 5–10 minutes, but berths and walking times vary by call, so treat that as a guide rather than a guarantee. Destinations such as Krk, Istria and Slovenia's karst sites all require organised coach or private transport from the port. Cross-border tours into Slovenia require valid travel documentation as required by the operator and border authorities; delays at the border are possible, so build a conservative return buffer. Always plan your day backwards from the ship's stated all-aboard time, not only its published departure.
