Krk or Istria from Rijeka?
Island character versus Roman towns and hill settlements.
Both directions leave Rijeka by road. The difference is the story you want: Adriatic island life, or Istrian history and flavours.
Krk: island landscapes, coastal towns, relaxed Croatian island atmosphere — often the simpler 'one island' narrative.
Istria: Pula and Rovinj for coast-and-Rome, or Motovun/Hum/Labin for hill towns and inland character.
Food angle: Istria often wins for olive oil, wine and hill-town gastronomy; Krk still offers local cuisine on island stops.
Timing: both need medium-to-long calls. Neither is a filler after a Slovenia cave morning.
Decision shortcut: want water and island light → Krk; want amphitheatre or Venetian harbour colour → Istria coast; want hilltop lanes → Istria inland.
